Nimbin Community Centre - Projects

Nimbin Community Centre in partnership with Nimbin Chamber of Commerce was successful in receiving a $5000 grant from NSW Department of Industry and Investment to establish a community website at www.nimbin.nsw.au.

The purpose of this website is to provide a central portal for all of the valuable non-profit services and organisations working within Nimbin and the surrounding region. Most non-profits are struggling to find funds to expand their networking onto the world-wide web so a free website presence is a big win for Nimbin.

The funding allowed for the creation of the community web portal and sub-sites for the Nimbin Chamber of Commerce, Nimbin School of Arts, Nimbin Preschool and Nimbin Aboriginal Cultural Centre. Within the website pages have been created for the Nimbin Walking Track Project and Nimbin Street Art Gallery. Other pages can be created as required for local groups who do not have a web presence.

Currently the Nimbin Community Web Portal is hosting a 'Nimbin Landscapes' photo competition to enhance the profile and community awareness of this website.

Nimbin Community Centre is committed to a sustainable future. Our vision is to be fully sustainable; environmentally, economically and socially. 

Sustainability has been described in a number of ways. Basically there is a common thread in all descriptions that alludes to the ability to sustain our way of life into the future. We need to link development and protection of the environment in order to protect and manage ecosystems and natural resources which are essential for fulfilling basic human needs and improving the quality of life for all.

In further projects we will be guided by the Key Principles of Sustainability.

In June 2012, the Nimbin Community Centre purchased a new property at number 7 Sibley street in Nimbin, for a long-term sustainability project: 7 Sibley - Nimbin's Sustainable Living Hub Project.  The idea of this project is to build a community space that demonstrates sustainable building practices and design. This project has a diverse concept plan that encompasses a number of important local initivitives and demonstrates community commitment to sustainable practices in areas of: environment, energy,  building, gardens and landscaping, artistic input, economics, invention and design, community gathering spaces.

The purchase of 7 Sibley St was made possible by the combined efforts of the Nimbin Neighbourhood and Information Centre and the Nimbin Community Centre plus a community member who has generously loaned us the funds. This in turn was made possible by all your pledges, which gave the lender confidence that we will repay the loan. WELL DONE NIMBIN! The loan is interest free until December 2012 so the aim is to repay the full amount by then. We will be relying on community donations to achieve this.
