Dr Michael Worthington (Osteopath)
Osteopathic Healthcare
As an Osteopath, I believe in restoring balance to the body by using manual therapy techniques, removing physical barriers that may be slowing the body’s natural ability to heal.
I enjoy using a wide variety of techniques and approaches that are individually tailored suit the patient’s needs. I enjoy connecting with people and trying to figure out how I can best help them.
I am a big believer in using my knowledge of the structure and function of the human body, to support both local and systemic changes that will improve the patient’s capacity for self-healing.
Osteopathy is a form of manual medicine that looks at the relationships between structure and function in the human body. By understanding that the individual structures have a specific job to do that fits into the overall health and wellbeing of the individual, the Osteopath looks to return the body to a space where it can best heal itself. When the structure of the body is altered then it will struggle to function. Similarly, when it is not functioning well, there will be structural changes to compensate. By looking at these changes the Osteopath aims to restore the tissues to their normal function by influencing their structure, and in doing so allow the body to heal itself as it was designed to do.
There are a large variety of techniques that can be used to achieve these goals, such as stretching, soft tissue, joint mobilization, fascial release, lymphatic drainage and balance ligamentous tension techniques, combined with lifestyle advice and exercise prescription. The Osteopath will negotiate this with the patient based on what their individual needs and what is best for their overall journey back to health. If at any time the patient is uncomfortable with a chosen method of treatment, then this can be discussed, and another treatment approach can be implemented which can achieve the same results with greater comfort.
